Welcome to Sow Arizona!

I'm Kara. I'm passionate about the ways plants, people, and places are connected. I'm a master gardener and writer in the Southwest, combining my degree in molecular biology and love for all things growing into a lifelong dedication to the art and science of gardening.

I create written content and educational videos that feature themes relevant to the history and significance of Sonoran Desert plants and effective gardening practices there. As an advocate for sustainable gardening practices and environmental stewardship, I promote the importance of preserving and enhancing our natural world. My garden content frequently touches on subjects like organic gardening, pollinator-friendly landscapes, soil health, and low water use gardening practices.

Just a few weeks ago, I noticed green blades peeking through the soil. I'd planted a ring of bulbs around each of my fig trees, having read that gophers dislike daffodil bulbs, and hoping this would surely be what finally deterred their incessant nibbling. I am impatient, and I admit to stalking them nearly every day until I noticed the tips of some of the green leaves swelling a week ago. I increased my surveillance. And yesterday, during my dusky evening walk, I saw it, a cheerful trumpet-shaped flower had unfolded. It's daffodil season, y'all. Finally.

This is a gentle reminder that gardening has always been about sharing: seeds, experiences, and stories. Seeds carry stories of seasons past, lessons learned, and hope for what’s next. When we trade seeds, we build community, preserve diversity, and keep knowledge alive in the simplest, most human way. Today is a beautiful day to share what you have and dream a little about what could grow next.

Sidenote: isn't this Flor del Rio popcorn pretty? I grew it last summer and it produced a ton of these colorful, petite ears. I saved plenty to plant again next season. I got the seeds a few years ago from Native Seeds/SEARCH and have been saving the seeds and growing it ever since!

A productive garden starts months ahead of planting time. What we plant, where we plant, and when we plant are all determined through careful planning, and quite a bit of daydreaming, too.

For now, I'm enjoying slow mornings and quiet golden hours in the garden doing just that. I've already been missing the colors of summer, and can't wait to walk through rainbow beds of zinnias again soon. I hope you're dreaming big and jotting down plans now, because spring is tiptoeing just beyond the horizon!

I got the first hard frost of the season in my garden last night. Yesterday morning, I tucked in all of the frost tender plants I wanted to keep and then anxiously awaited checking on them this morning. Some were covered with a glittery layer of frost, but will slowly recover as the sun rises.

I released a video yesterday about how to keep your garden protected from winter temperatures If you want to get all the tips for protecting your plants from Old Jack Frost, check the video out! Here's the link:

Fresh juice made with garden goodness! I did buy the cucumber, because unfortunately, those are long gone for now.

People garden for so many different reasons; for access to healthy or more affordable food, for exercise, for the mental health benefits, from a passion for plants, for the love of the practice, to support pollinators. Whatever the reason, it brings so much joy and abundance.

Wherever you are, and for whatever reason you grow, I hope it's enriching your life in the ways you've hoped for.

Now, I'm going to go eat this lovely plate of food I picked just moments ago and feel grateful for this little patch of earth I get to care for.
