Rhombodera fratricida
(Indomalayan Giant Praying Mantis). ⁣

The largest mantis in my collection, this particular specimen had a really neat species name I couldn’t resist sharing. Fratricide refers to the murder of ones own sibling and in the mantis world siblings are always on the menu. Many mantids (along with many other inverts) commit fratricide simply as a form of competition. Too many siblings can mean less food to go around, so basic math tells us the less siblings there are, the more food to go around! And two birds with one stone if it means the sibling is the food themselves. ⁣

Anyways, yea just be glad you weren’t born a insect! Singling rivalry would have a very different meaning…

While my motivation to post on this account has dropped considerably, my fascination with invertebrates is still going strong! Pictured here is one of South America’s largest and strongest insects. It has antennae longer than it’s body and a pair of mandibles that function as bolt cutters to chew through the tough tree trunks they grew up in. Really hope I get to see one of these in the wild one day!

Endemic to the rainforests of Southern Madagascar, these striking pinheaded katydids inhabit tree hallows where they emerge in the evening hours to feed! The male specimen on the right has large buff arms to compete with other males and defend his the females he has paired with💪🏼! ⁣
By and far one of my favorite Madagascan natives!
