The current Reload Ranked season ends on February 19. Eliminate opponents and achieve high placement in matches to climb the ranks and earn Ranked cosmetic rewards before ranks reset!

Rocket League on Linux and Steam Deck will support Easy Anti-Cheat. Why can't Fortnite?

Psyonix announced earlier today that Rocket League will introduce Easy Anti-Cheat, the same anti-cheat service used by Fortnite, in an attempt to quell a rising cheater issue in the game. Interestingly, the announcement specified that the game will still be supported on Steam Deck, despite the fact that Fortnite, using the same anti-cheat service, remains unplayable on Steam Deck.

Psyonix is likely taking advantage of a 2021 update which allowed developers to enable Easy Anti-Cheat support for Linux and Mac players. So, why isn't same support enabled for Fortnite? Tim Sweeney, the chief decision-maker at Epic, suggested in a 2022 Twitter thread that Epic "doesn’t have confidence that [they'd] be able to combat cheating at scale" in Fortnite if Linux support was enabled. Easy Anti-Cheat on Linux runs in the user space, meaning that it can't detect cheats running in the kernel - making it possible for cheaters to bypass the anti-cheat.

At least, that's what Tim Sweeney thinks. Many Linux users have argued against these claims, calling kernel-level anti-cheat systems invasive and ineffective against cheaters. Instead, they believe that Epic Games and other developers simply choose not to support Linux, since it is significantly less popular than Windows. In fact, Epic Games recently announced a partnership with Microsoft which would bring the Epic Games Store to the next Xbox console - could that be an incentive for them to ignore Linux?

Does all this mean Fortnite will never come to Linux? It might not... but maybe it will. In 2023, Tim Sweeney praised the Steam Deck in an interview with The Verge, and suggested that Epic Games would seriously consider supporting it once the platform had a large enough userbase. Rocket League's commitment to continue supporting Linux could mean that Epic Games is starting to take Linux users seriously... but we'll have to wait and see if that means Fortnite will come to Linux, too.

Nintendo is also considering raising the price of the Switch 2. The reason is that both companies are struggling with the hardware availability crisis.
