The Mission Inn began as a small boarding house in the late 1800s. Over the years, it has grown into the resort that it is now, encompassing a full city block. Several U.S. Presidents have stayed here, including Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Herbert Hoover, Richard Nixon, and Ronald Reagan. The hotel has also hosted celebrities such as Judy Garland, Bette Davis, Clark Gable, Tom Hanks, and Barbara Streisand. The property boasts four different restaurants and 238 rooms, including 27 suites. A special chair, which was made specifically for President Taft, the largest of the U.S. Presidents, is on display in the hotel lobby. The original owner, Willie Schrier, ran the restaurant until 1980, when his daughters took over the day to day operations. In 2007, Willie's daughters retired, and the restaurant was sold. The current owners bought the establishment in 2014 and are dedicated to preserving the legacy of this local gem. I loved this cozy, retro restaurant! They just don't make them like this anymore, and it's a real treat when you come across an old school place like this.
