Peter Gabriel is best known as a musician. He started his solo work in 1975 after leaving his old school group: Genesis. He has released eleven solo albums and written and released soundtracks for three films.
The latest video upload to 5050 is a second submission from Mike Bennion a British sculptor and painter living in the USA. His film Carpe Diem features Wall of Breath from Passion and is a response to an earlier film he made called ‘memento mori’. In that film a man reflected on the death of his little sister, whilst this film is his sisters’ reply, from ‘the other side’, the next life... "I found Peter’s music in ‘Wall of Breath’ the perfect accompaniment," says Mike. "Quiet, reflective, evocative, allowing the words to breathe."
This week in February last year, the first band session for the o\i album was in full swing at Real World Studios.
"We've had two band sessions in the past year, so that's a good example that I'm really enjoying doing things at the moment, and they're playing magnificently."
Record Store Day 2026 has just announced their list of releases for April, and it includes a zoetrope picture disc 12” of Sledgehammer, designed by Drew Tetz and Marc Bessant.
‘Sledgehammer was obviously a big track from that record and that was, in part, homage to the music that I grew up with. I loved soul music, blues music and that was a chance to work with some of the brass players that had worked with Otis Redding, who’s my all-time favourite singer. It was a fun thing to do, but again that was built around a great groove and a good feel.’
Record Store Day is Saturday 18 April. Please visit the Record Store Day website to check out the full list of releases and also visit
your local record store to see what they plan to order!
“I started building rhythmic elements around, what I call, a lop-sided loop, and got quite excited. When we had the band play it, it really came to life so that feels good for me. The band and me working away is the bulk of the song, but when we were in the orchestral sessions, I asked John Metcalfe to come up with a part - it was scribbled out on the day in the studio – which is ridiculously simple, but it serves the song nicely.
We're also blessed with horn players. I was very lucky on the last record to play with Paolo Fresu and then Josh Shpak on the tour and they've both done a version of the instrumental melody on this too.”
The snow full moon heralds the arrival of Put the Bucket Down, the second track from Peter Gabriel’s forthcoming album o\i.
With it’s shuffle-groove and infectiously catchy hook and chorus Put the Bucket Down conjures dream-like imagery of mind reading, thought reading and thought writing – all of which are possible through the brain / computer interface. The character singing is getting very confused …
“As a side project, I am working on a show with the brain as the central core and there are a number of songs, some on i/o and some on o\i that will be part of that. This is one of those and it's a point in the narrative where we can both read and write thoughts and the person singing is not sure whether he has his own thoughts or not. Is he inside his own mind or inside someone else's?
The ‘bucket’ is all the crap that goes around our head all the time, so it is putting the bucket down to find your way forward…”
After a short hiatus over the holiday season, the first video for 2026 on 5050.dev is for the song Digging in the Dirt and comes courtesy of creative technologist, multimedia artist and musician Dan DeGeest and his creative partner, animator and author Terran Boylan. Of the clip Dan says "the collaboration evokes my memories of the original MTV-era video while reimagining the song through the exploratory, remix-oriented ethos of XPLORA1 and the creative vocabulary of evolving generative AI tools."
The Bright-Side mix of Been Undone has been released for the new moon. Peter has given Tchad Blake and Mark 'Spike' Stent slightly different materials to work from, for their respective mixes, so with the release of the Bright-Side you can start to make your own comparisons… Tchad’s Dark-Side is the longer mix, ‘he quite likes things just taking their time to evolve,’ says Peter, whilst Spike’s Bright-Side is noticeably different, ‘I think Spike is brilliant at creating these wonderful atmospheres…’
As with i/o, each track on the new album will be accompanied by a piece of art and Been Undone has a cover image called Ciclotrama 156 (Palindrome) by São Paulo–based artist Janaina Mello Landini. ‘The first artwork is a special piece from Janaina Mello Landini. The way she takes the rope and moves it out, unravelling it, is almost like fractals or tree trunks and looks like the brain in some ways too, so I see a lot of entry points. I am delighted that Janaina is willing to participate and be part of the process. We are using one of her existing images for this month to open the whole proceedings but I'm excited that she's now going to create a piece, especially for the song. That always gives it a little more excitement from my end to see what's going to come up. Please do check out her work.’
Saturday, 3 January, 2026 – the first full moon of the year, the Wolf Moon, and Peter Gabriel releases the first new song from his forthcoming album o\i.
Been Undone was written and produced by Peter Gabriel and recorded at Real World Studios, Bath and The Beehive in London. This is the Dark-Side Mix by Tchad Blake.
‘I’m delighted to say that tonight, at the full moon, we will be beginning another year of full moon releases under the name o\i.
The songs are a mix of thoughts and feelings.
I have been thinking about the future and how we might respond to it. We are sliding into a period of transition like no other, most likely triggered in three waves; AI, quantum computing and the brain computer interface. Artists have a role to look into the mists and, when they catch sight of something, to hold up a mirror.
These are my lumpy bits – i/o: the inside has a new way out and o\i: the outside has a new way in.
We are not, and have never been, the exclusively self-determining, independent beings that have been given the run of the world. We are something else, a part of nature, a part of everything and feeling a connection, shaking our booty and giving and receiving some love can help us find our place - and put a big smile on our faces.
Some of these songs are going to form part of the brain project that I’ve been exploring for a number of years, and some just make me feel happy. I hope you like them.’
