Looks Like Rain is a 1969 concept album by singer-songwriter Mickey Newbury. After recording his debut album with RCA, Newbury was dissatisfied with the resulting album and left RCA to pursue a style closer to his tastes. Pre-order now: fatpossum.com/products/looks-like-rain
"Looks Like Rain is so fine, so mysterious in its pace, dimension, quark strangeness and charm, it defies any attempt at strict categorization or criticism; a rare work of genius." - All Music
Mickey Newbury quietly shaped the sound of American music. In 1968 alone, he had four Top 5 hits—across five different genre charts. That kind of reach is almost unheard of.
But Newbury wasn’t just a songwriter’s songwriter. He was wildly ambitious in his own recordings—pushing boundaries in production, structure, and emotion long before other contemporaries. His albums were intimate, cinematic, and decades ahead of their time. Rain & train sounds included.
Most of that work has been out of print for years. We're changing that.
Today we're proud to announce that @fat_possum has acquired the master recordings and publishing from Mickey Newbury’s estate. “We’re going to try our best to give Mickey Newbury the credit that he deserves,”says Matthew, founder of Fat Possum Records. To kick things off, we’re launching “Quality Music, Low Price” with vinyl editions of Looks Like Rain, Frisco Mabel Joy, and Heaven Help the Child hitting stores this summer for just $16.
