The U.K., France, Germany, Sweden, and the Netherlands have released a joint statement confirming that Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was poisoned with a lethal toxin called epibatidine—a chemical found in South American poison dart frogs.
The nations are holding the Russian state responsible, citing that only they had the means, motive, and disregard for international law to carry out the attack. They’ve reported the matter to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
Navalny, a fierce critic of Vladimir Putin, died in February 2024 while serving a 19-year sentence in an Arctic penal colony. His widow, Yulia Navalnaya, has consistently blamed Putin, while Russian officials deny any involvement.
What do you think this means for Russia’s relations with Europe moving forward?

Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych has been disqualified from the Milano Cortina Winter Games after wearing a “helmet of remembrance” honoring Ukrainian athletes killed in the war with Russia.
The International Olympic Committee said the decision followed a meeting between Heraskevych and IOC President Kirsty Coventry. While Coventry called the message “powerful,” she said no agreement could be reached on using the helmet during competition.
The IOC had offered alternatives, including displaying the helmet before and after the race and wearing a black armband. Heraskevych’s team says it will appeal the disqualification at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

French President Emmanuel Macron visited ArcelorMittal’s Dunkirk site alongside Economy Minister Roland Lescure and Industry Minister Sébastien Martin as the company confirmed a €1.3 billion investment in a new electric arc furnace.
The facility, set to begin operations in 2029, will produce 2 million tonnes of steel annually with significantly lower emissions — around three times less CO₂ than traditional blast furnace production.
The project will receive 50% funding support through France’s Energy Efficiency Certificates scheme and follows recent EU regulatory changes on steel imports and carbon policies. ArcelorMittal has also secured a long-term electricity deal with EDF.
CEO Aditya Mittal said the investment reflects the company’s long-term commitment to France, as it also launches a €500 million electrical steel unit nearby.

Ghislaine Maxwell, longtime associate of Jeffrey Epstein, refused to answer questions from a U.S. House committee, invoking her 5th Amendment rights during a planned prison video deposition.
Lawmakers are investigating how Epstein operated for years and who may have enabled his crimes. Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year sentence for sex trafficking and is attempting to overturn her conviction.
The move comes as Congress reviews newly released Epstein files and continues probing his network of powerful contacts. Despite a subpoena issued last year, Maxwell’s legal team had already signaled she would not cooperate with questioning.

Newly released US court documents suggest Prince Andrew, brother of King Charles III, shared confidential UK trade information with Jeffrey Epstein during his time as a UK trade envoy between 2010 and 2011.
Emails seen by the BBC indicate Andrew passed on details of official trips to Singapore, Hong Kong, Vietnam and China, along with confidential reports and investment opportunities, including a government-funded reconstruction project in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province.
Under official rules, trade envoys are required to keep sensitive commercial and political information confidential, even after leaving office. Epstein was already a convicted sex offender at the time some of the emails were sent.
Prince Andrew has consistently denied any wrongdoing, and being named in the Epstein files is not proof of misconduct. He has been contacted for comment but has yet to respond. Former business secretary Vince Cable said he was unaware of any such information sharing.
Andrew, who was stripped of royal titles last year, recently moved to the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk.
