Panthers Downunder

Our panthers downunder team were out on location on a property earlier this year, after we set up camp, we checked out the creek and found these prints, very fresh prints possibly a day or two old, viewing the area where they were walking through wet mud their claws were out, and then were they had moved onto firmer ground their claws were retracted.

The average size on measurement was 10cm with the younger ones being 7cm Ive have seen dingo prints before and these prints were not dog prints.

An interesting town about an hour west of Emmaville, lots of history of big cats the towns sign speaks for itself. Unfortunately, most of the town's newspapers are gone as they are now mostly digital.

Before I headed up there last year, I put posts up on the community pages to try and round up some people for interviews. I had a few interviews at Emmaville and Glen Innes but nothing at Coolatai, I thought that's weird as I researched the history of big cats there and it was quite interesting.

One report was a big cat had cubs under a town building and was seen carrying the cubs in its mouth up the street. Another was people camping in a caravan with an annex, they woke in the night to a big cat ripping their annex apart trying to get in, imaging the shock of that!

Theres a bit of banter if you camp at the hall camp area and you wander up town to the local pub for a few coldies, "when you're walking back to the camp area keep your eyes open for Panthers" they say! Depends on how many coldies you had you might see two.

Out where I work, I was talking to one of the guys who actually worked up at Coolatai 10 years prior, carting stone in a truck, one afternoon he was driving through a cutting and noticed a dead roo on the side of the road and what looked like a pig having a feed on it. He slowed down and pulled up next to the roo, and nearly crapped himself, it wasn't a pig it was a huge black cat crouched down.

As he stopped it took off straight up the stone wall beside him about 6mtr high, he just couldn't believe how fast and agile the cat was. He pulled into the local pub for a coldie and told his story.
