उत्तरकाशी जिले के डोडीताल को गणेशजी का जन्म स्थान माना जाता है। यहां पर माता अन्नपूर्णा का प्राचीन मंदिर हैं जहां गणेशजी अपनी माता के साथ विराजमान हैं। डोडीताल, जोकि मूल रूप से बुग्‍याल के बीच में काफी लंबी-चौड़ी झील है, वहीं गणेश का जन्‍म हुआ था। यह भी कहा जाता है कि केलसू, जो मूल रूप से एक पट्टी है (पहाड़ों में गांवों के समूह को पट्टी के रूप में जाना जाता है) का मूल नाम कैलाशू है। इसे स्‍थानीय लोग शिव का कैलाश बताते हैं। केलसू क्षेत्र असी गंगा नदी घाटी के सात गांवों को मिलाकर बना है। गणेश भगवान को स्‍थानीय बोली में डोडी राजा कहा जाता हैं जो केदारखंड में गणेश के लिए प्रचलित नाम डुंडीसर का अपभ्रंश है। मान्यता अनुसार डोडीताल क्षेत्र मध्‍य कैलाश में आता था और डोडीताल गणेश की माता और शिव की पत्‍नी पार्वती का स्‍नान स्‍थल था। स्‍वामी चिद्मयानंद के गुरु रहे स्‍वामी तपोवन ने मुद्गल ऋषि की लिखी मुद्गल पुराण के हवाले से अपनी किताब हिमगिरी विहार में भी डोडीताल को गणेश का जन्‍मस्‍थल होने की बात लिखी है। वैसे कैलाश पर्वत तो यहां से सैंकड़ों मील दूर है परंतु स्थानीय लोग मानते हैं कि एक समय यहां माता पार्वती विहार पर थी तभी गणेशजी का जन्म हुआ था।
