Matthew 22:1-14 is a parable told by Jesus, often referred to as the Parable of the Wedding Banquet.

The Parable

Verses 1-2:
> Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son."

Meaning: Jesus begins by comparing the kingdom of heaven to a king who organizes a grand wedding feast for his son, symbolizing God's invitation to humanity to join in His kingdom.

Verses 3-6:
> He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come. Then he sent some more servants and said, ‘Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner: My oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.’ But they paid no attention and went off—one to his field, another to his business. The rest seized his servants, mistreated them, and killed them.

Meaning: The initial invitees represent the Jewish people, particularly the religious leaders, who were first invited into God's kingdom but rejected His prophets and messengers. Their excuses and mistreatment of the servants symbolize their disregard and hostility towards God's invitation.

Verses 7-10:
> The king was enraged. He sent his army and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come. So go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find.’ So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, the bad as well as the good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests.

Meaning: The king's reaction symbolizes God's judgment on those who reject Him. The subsequent invitation to everyone, good and bad alike, represents the extension of God's invitation to all people, Gentiles as well as Jews. This reflects the inclusive nature of God's kingdom.

Verses 11-13:
> But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. He asked, ‘How did you get in here without wedding clothes, friend?’ The man was speechless. Then the king told the attendants, ‘Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

Meaning: The man without wedding clothes represents those who accept the invitation but do not live in a manner worthy of the kingdom. The wedding clothes symbolize righteousness and the transformation expected in those who follow Christ. The punishment of the improperly dressed guest highlights the necessity of genuine repentance and change.

Verse 14:
> “For many are invited, but few are chosen.”

Meaning:This final statement underscores that while God's invitation is open to all, only those who respond appropriately and live according to His will are chosen to remain in the kingdom.
