NEW FOR 2026 - ANNIVERSARY PHOTO CHARTERS

To celebrate 75 Years of the World's First Preserved Railway, we are hosting four special Photo Charters themed around some of the unusual parts of the Talyllyn's long and varied history.

Each charter promises plenty of chances to disembark for unique photo opportunities!

14th March, A Day in the Midlands: No.5 'Midlander' appears on a photo charter for the first time, recreating 1960's Market Day Trains and Extension Tipper runs!
Book before 28th February to ensure this Photo CharTR goes ahead

12th April, Wagons on the P/Way: No. 2 'Dolgoch' will take us back to the 1950s with loaded wagons and re-enactors dressed in period Territorial Army uniforms, remembering the days when our trackwork wasn't quite so good!

31st May, Running Well!: Our most reliable No.9 'Alf' brings us up to the present day with a special mixed permanent way train!

6th September, Vintage Van-Guard: Flash-back to the 1940's with 'Dolgoch' again and relive a slice of niche Talyllyn History, when passenger trains ran without a Guard's Van!

Tickets for all charters are EXTREMELY LIMITED - book now to avoid disappointment!


N.B We recommend that participants are fully ambulant as we will be disembarking trains where there are no platforms or steps. Please wear appropriate sturdy footwear – and bring enough charged camera batteries to last!

Thomas & Friends™: Wonders of Sodor - Coming Soon!

A brand new game from Dovetail Games, the developers of Train Sim World, has just been announced - and we've helped out!

The Reverend Wilbert Awdry had a 3D Relief Map of the Island of Sodor made in 1950 to his notes and design, this was so he could accurately plot where his stories took place and where any new railway lines could naturally fit into the existing topography.

This original 3D map now proudly lives within the Awdry Study display in the Narrow Gauge Railway Museum at Tywyn Wharf, and was 3D scanned for preservation a few years ago - so when we found out about this exciting project we were more than happy to help.

The 3D Scan was provided to the team over at Dovetail Games and they have worked their magic to transform it into a fully explorable map, for the first time EVER you can step onto a geographically accurate Island of Sodor within Thomas & Friends™: Wonders of Sodor!

Take the controls of 5 different engines and explore freely, go into Timetable Mode and live out a day in the life of your favourite character or enter Story Mode and re-live some classic and brand new stories first-hand.

As part of our 75th anniversary celebrations Vintage Trains will be running their inaugural Cambrian Coast Express Railtour to Tywyn & Pwllheli on the 17th April 2026 - with the chance to opt in for a special double-headed Talyllyn Railway service hauled by No.1 'Tal-y-llyn' and No.2 'Dolgoch'!

The mainline tour will be hauled by VT's own Class 37 No.37240, and joined by one of Network Rail's Class 97s at Shrewsbury to Pwllheli and back.

The Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society's first secretary, Pat Whitehouse, went on to found the Vintage Trains Charitable Trust later in his life and we are proud to celebrate this connection between our organisations with this amazing railtour!
