This image illustrates an SR latch, a fundamental building block of computer memory, along with its truth table.

On the left is the circuit diagram, which shows two cross-coupled NOR gates. The 'S' input stands for 'Set,' and the 'R' input stands for 'Reset.' The outputs are 'Q' and 'Q-bar,' which represent the stored state and its opposite.

The truth table on the right explains how the latch operates:
When both S and R are 0, the latch holds its previous state. This is the memory function.
When R is 1 and S is 0, the latch resets, forcing the Q output to 0.
When S is 1 and R is 0, the latch sets, forcing the Q output to 1.
The condition where both S and R are 1 is considered invalid because it forces both Q and Q-bar to 0, which violates the rule that they should be opposites.
