Greetings!

Issue 2 of John Calvin's Illustrated Institutes (Book 1, Chapters 6–9) is well underway. I thought it would be fun to show you a simplified version of my 8-step process (in 4 steps) for finishing a comic page.

1. Thumbnail
A rough thumbnail based on my reading of the script helps to quickly map out the storytelling and composition. Typically, I thumbnail an entire chapter to see how the story flows from page to page before moving to the later stages. Thinking and drawing at the same time is often messy and usually resembles toddler-like scribbles! 🤪

2. Pencils
Using the thumbnails as a guide, the penciling begins. This is where I refine details such as character proportions, balloon placement, background environments, etc.
✏️ I like to pencil in blue because it is easier to distinguish from the black line art in the next stage.

3. Inks
Black ink is used to finalize the page, providing depth through crisp, clean lines and giving life to the scene.

4. Color & Finishing
Solid colors are added to the page, followed by shadows and highlights. Effects such as sun beams, glowing lights, and atmospheric fog are a dynamic way to make the page really come to life.

They will discover the value of their souls when it is too late to obtain mercy, and see the beauty of the Gospel when they can derive no benefit from it. Oh, that men would be wise early in life! I often think there are few passages of Scripture more awful than that in the first chapter of Proverbs,

“But since you rejected me when I called and no one gave heed when I stretched out my hand, since you ignored all my advice and would not accept my rebuke, I in turn will laugh at your disaster; I will mock when calamity overtakes you-- when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you. Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me. Since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD, since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke, they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.” (Proverbs 1:24-31)
