Visit the Bonobos Today! 🐒 I spent some time with our closest relatives today. Unfortunately, there wasn't any special enrichment out for them on this special World Bonobo Day. 😔ℹ️ BUT there was some big news.....

OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT FROM TWYCROSS ZOO:

"A NEW HOME FOR THE UK'S ONLY BONOBO TROOP!!
This World Bonobo Day, we are excited to share that we are making some changes here at our charity zoo, to create TWO reimagined animal habitats for our bonobos and chimpanzees. Following careful plans by our expert teams, we will be swapping over our chimpanzee and bonobo habitats, to improve our care of both species. Over time the needs of both species has evolved! This change helps us better meet those needs and maximise our contribution to conservation, whilst also creating some wonderful new spaces for YOU, our visitors to explore and discover these incredible endangered apes. To allow for these exciting changes, Chimpanzee Eden and the current bonobo house will close after February Half Term, reopening in Easter 2026."

💔 I have to admit, it makes me a to think of the chimps moving back to their old home and how are they going to feel being back in a much smaller space? There was so much hope for the Twycross Zoo chimpanzees when Chimpanzee Eden was built, but sadly the breeding programme didn't quite take off as everyone had planned.

On the bright side, the bonobos are going to have an absolutely amazing time in that huge enclosure! I can’t wait to see how they use all that vertical space once they move in this Easter.

World Bonobo Day 2026 🌿❤️
Did you know it is World Bonobo Day?
While everyone else is focused on Valentine’s cards and chocolates, I am celebrating our closest living relatives. It is no accident that we celebrate these incredible great apes today.
The "Make Love, Not War" Apes
Unlike their more aggressive cousins, bonobos live in a matriarchal society where affection and cooperation are the status quo.

Peacekeepers: They use hugs and grooming to resolve conflicts.

Matriarchy: Female bonobos lead the groups, ensuring stability.

Bonding: They prioritise social connection above all else.

In a world that can often feel divided, we could all learn a little something from the bonobo way of life. I feel so privileged to have captured these moments on my own camera over the years and to share the beauty of these peaceful primates with you all.

Celebrating Afia’s 10th Birthday and a Grand New Adventure! 🎂✨
Today is a very special day as we celebrate Gorilla Afia’s birthday! 🎈 She is turning 10 years old today! 🦍🎉
It has been a few years since I last saw her in person, so I can only imagine how much she has grown and changed since my last visit.
This year, the celebrations are even more historic. I am thrilled to share the brilliant news that the family finally moved to their brand new home at the Bristol Zoo Project yesterday! 🏠🚚 According to the BBC, the move was a massive operation involving armed guards to ensure the safety of the troop and the team. 👮‍♂️🛡️ Brilliant news all around!
I hope they settle quickly and everything went smoothly with the move. Here is the latest:
New Neighbours: The cherry-crowned mangabeys seem to be already there! 🐒🤝 This will be a "mixed habitat" which the gorillas aren't used to, so they will likely have a very slow, careful introduction to their new roommates.
Settling In: Because they need time to get used to their new environment and stay "off-show" while they bond, it will be a while before I can bring you fresh footage. 🎥🚫
