7 Cyber Security Truths I wish I knew Earlier. These are definitely things I wish someone told me before. It all boils down to doing the hard things that you know you need to do, ditch the ‘cutting corners’ mentality, and don’t look for ways to do the bare minimum.

This is the GRC Roadmap that I recommend you follow:

I didn't wanna share this initially because it's too personal, but I know someone out there will benefit from reading this.

I remember back and forth messages with this student as he finished GRC Mastery, he questioned why the roadmap in my video was set in a certain way and wanted to change things around. He was frustrated that he didn't reach his goal as fast as thought he would. He didn't understand the value of GRC knowledge for cyber security professionals, regardless of specialty/interest.

I told him to trust the process and it'll all make sense. It took him a little over a year (see the dates on each message) to reach his goal all while struggling with a life changing medical issue.

Now I wanted to share this, because I remember at that time, a guy who runs a cyber security podcast left a nasty comment on one of my videos, I chose to ignore it, but I'm glad I didn't choose to ignore my message and continued doing what I do, because I have an important mission.

Keep going and ignore the naysayers, it will all make sense.

8 years ago, I left technical cyber work and moved into GRC. Everyone thought I was crazy, and honestly even I wasn’t 100% sure I was making the right decision.

Now, 8 years later, I’ve got a lot to say about what I gained, what I lost, and what nobody tells you before making the switch. I shared the full story in this video, and answered the big question:

I looked at a least 20 Cyber Security Resumes in the last couple of months and I heard the same complaint from candidates:

- "I applied to xxx jobs and I didn't get a single interview, can you please review my resume?"

Those resumes were all well-formatted, didn't have any mistakes. In fact, they all looked professionally written.

But

Without a single exception, all the resumes that I looked at had one thing in common:

- One or two at best entry level certs. That's it.

So the candidate will have something like Google cyber cert, or CompTIA sec+/Net+

some candidates even had more entry level certs like ccna or A+.

THIS WAS the problem.

Doing one or two entry level certs is barely scratching the surface. They're meant to be an introduction to the field - not the entire field.

Imagine trying to learn a foreign language, and expect to be proficient after ONE class. It doesn't work that way.

Sure some people manage to land a job with the bare minimum but this is not a strategy. Pace yourself, and tackle practical hands-on intermediate level training

yes it will take time, effort, consistency, and patience.

I don't have shortcuts.

It used to be a lot harder because a few years ago we didn't have access to affordable practical training, and the only option was a $10K SANS training, but now things are a lot more accessible

However, accessible doesn't mean easy. It'll take time and hard work

Good luck!
