Hedgehogs Listed in the Red List 🌍🦔
Hedgehogs have been added to the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List as a species close to vulnerable status. Over the past decade, hedgehog populations have declined by at least 30% in most of their natural habitats.
Urban development, intensive agriculture, and roadways have fragmented their habitats, pushing hedgehogs closer to the brink. 🏘️🚜🌿
“Their populations have suffered due to vehicle collisions, pesticide use, and poor maintenance of home gardens,” reports the IUCN. “Pesticides kill the insects hedgehogs rely on and can poison the animals directly.” 🚗❌🐛
Experts recommend several ways to help hedgehogs: 🌱🏠
- Gardeners are encouraged to avoid aggressive pesticides that harm hedgehogs and their food sources.
- Creating hedgehog-friendly spaces, like small shelters and natural habitats, can provide a much-needed refuge.
- Leaving small gaps in fences also allows hedgehogs to move safely between gardens.
