Brush pen ink cheat sheet ✨ (save for later) ⁠

Brush pens are usually labeled as either “water-based” or “pigment”. But those terms aren’t opposites! (In fact, many pigment pens are water-based.) ⁠
⁠
Inks are usually classified by two main factors:⁠
👉 What carries the color: Dye vs. Pigment⁠
👉 What the liquid base is: water, alcohol, oil, etc.⁠
⁠
Dye vs Pigment:⁠
⁠
In dye-based inks, the color molecules are dissolved in the liquid base. They are:⁠
✅ Bright, vibrant, and easy to blend (great for gradients + watercolor effects)⁠
✅ More affordable and widely available⁠
⚠️ Tradeoff: less lightfast, meaning colors may fade over time with exposure to light⁠
⁠
Pigment-based inks have tiny solid color particles suspended in the base (rather than being dissolved). They're:⁠
✅ Archival quality: resistant to fading, light, and water⁠
✅ Opaque coverage and crisp detail⁠
⚠️ Tradeoff: less blendable than dyes, and often more expensive⁠
⁠
👉 Rule of thumb:⁠
Pigment inks = best for final artworks you want to last⁠
Dye-based inks = best for practice, blending, and vibrant effects⁠

How to hold a brush pen 🏆 (save for later!)

Brush pens are simple tools.

...but you'd be surprised how easy it is to adopt bad technique 👻

Follow these two steps to have correct form and avoid damaging your pens!

1) Angle the pen 45-degrees to the paper to help it flex easily. You may need to move your hand backwards, farther away from the tip.
2) Place your hand to the side of the letters rather than underneath. You can turn your paper to help with this.

Bonus tip: Relax! Don't grip the pen too tightly. Remind yourself to lighten up ☺️
