President Donald Trump holds a new conference after the United States said it captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, and flown them out of the country. The airstrikes on Caracas in the early hours of Saturday morning and the “capture” of Maduro of Venezuela mark the most dramatic US intervention in Latin America in decades. But this is not the first time the United States has intervened in Venezuela, or the wider region.

The US has in the past used its military to halt the potential spread of communism in Latin America, including the overthrow of the Guatemalan government by President Eisenhower, the disastrous Bay of Pigs invasion in Cuba by President Kennedy, the US invasion of Grenada by President Reagan and his support for the the Nicaraguan Contras militia.
Ten days after taking office for his second term, Trump signed an executive order that paved the way for drug cartels to be designated “foreign terrorist organisations”. Trump accuses Maduro and drug smugglers in the region of “flooding” America with cocaine and fentanyl. The strikes are the culmination of a year-long campaign by the US president.
