Mammoths: Exploring the World of Mammoths
The mammoth is an extinct species of ancient elephant. They belong to the genus Mammuthus, subspecies Mammuthus primigenius. They first appeared in East Asia about 400,000 years ago and were widely distributed across the continents during the late Ice Age. They had a coat of nearly 50cm long, denser than modern elephants, had long and curved tusks, very long mammoth teeth, curved inward, up to 5cm at the longest, had short hind legs, so the center of gravity of the whole body was tilted.
