(🎧 encouraged) (Read below) Fresh Gear Friday: 1970’s Pearl MIJ Drum Kit . . . The search for a new drum kit started when I found out that the owner of the Sonor kit I was using needed it back for his studio. The whole story is that I saw this kit when it first went up on Facebook market. I didn’t end up buying it at the time because I still had the Sonor kit and couldn’t house another kit in my studio. Well, to my luck, this Pearl kit jumped back on the market, and I snagged it for $200! Don’t get me wrong, there are some imperfections with the kit, but nothing that causes it to sound bad. The edges are in great shape, and the orange sparkle re-wrap makes this kit pop. With some digging, I found out that this kit is from a 1973 6-piece kit and would later, in 1976, turn into what Pearl called the Big Beat kit. The kit sizes are a 13” x 9” and 14” x 10” rack Tom’s, 16” x 16” and 18” x 16” floor Tom’s, and a 22” x 14” kick drum. I have all these sizes except the 18” x 16” floor tom. In the 1973 catalog, this kit came in 3 different shell types: all wood, fiberglass-lined wood, and all fiberglass. These drums are a fiberglass-lined wood kit with a thin layer of fiberglass inside of the shells. It originally had a wood wrap, but that wrap was peeling badly, which is why it got re-wrapped. I’m so glad it was. I’m excited to get new drum heads on this kit, but for now, these used heads will do. Stay tuned! What do you guys think? What do you think of the look and sound of this drum kit?
