Copper carnage at KGHM! Kropiwnicki's people "in the car"? Will Robert buy more apartments?
In the latest article from the Traveler's Eye series, we take a look behind the scenes of events that are only whispered about in Legnica, so as not to offend the copper giant. On January 20, 2026, the KGHM shareholders' meeting was convened, and it seems that for many local activists, it was a day of political judgment. What's happening there is a true MASSACRE of the old system. Officially: management changes and a new strategy. Unofficially: a massive collapse and a copper carnage of appointees who have felt at home in the company for years. However, a peculiar "omerta" prevails in Legnica – local portals and newspapers may be afraid to cover this topic for fear of losing advertising revenue. After all, KGHM is the largest contributor in the region, and no one wants to cut off their cash drip.
The question of the day is: will those associated with Robert Kropiwnicki finally land on the payroll, or perhaps—as their resourcefulness suggests so far—they're already comfortably "in the payroll," counting the profits from further severance payments? Robert Kropiwnicki, Undersecretary of State and a figure known in Legnica for his extraordinary passion for collecting apartments (of which he already lists 12, each with an area of 640 square meters!), is sometimes perceived as the main architect of local personnel arrangements. If his trusted people lose their jobs at subsidiaries, will the Legnica real estate market face another sharp price spike? One gets the impression that every large severance payment at KGHM is reflected in new notarial deeds. It's a fascinating mechanism: we all contribute to the State Treasury's assets, and political appointees seem to be turning them into private square meters for rent. It's shocking that this is happening before our eyes!
At the same time that the top brass are fighting for survival and a "safe landing," we're witnessing true personnel "miracles" in KGHM's foundations and subsidiaries. Reports are emerging of extremely short but highly lucrative career stints for individuals closely linked to the local government, including those close to the mayor of Legnica. Are these sudden promotions and even quicker departures merely aimed at securing high severance packages and paid bans on working for competitors? If so, what we're dealing with in practice is a luxurious, year-long vacation at the expense of the Polish taxpayer. "That's how you cough in Legnica" – this bitter saying perfectly captures the reality in which an ordinary person struggling to survive in the marketplace can only dream of such perks and political "airbags."
Let's remember, however, that the pursuit of the next position and the sixteenth apartment has its dark side. The stress of losing copper influence, frantic calls to Warsaw, and attempts to salvage the situation often result in health problems. Diseases of civilization, such as diabetes, seem unwilling to recognize party legitimacy or immunity. Fate is sometimes unforgiving: the effects of stress and an unhealthy pursuit of power befall everyone, no matter how long the list of property ownership is. It's a MASSACRE of the body in the name of copper profits.
As the author of the "Through the Eyes of a Traveler" series, I look at this operation with a smile of pity. I love you, Poland, because despite all this conspiracy of silence, the truth is beginning to emerge. See for yourselves how this copper carousel spins and let us know in the comments: do you think this is the end of the "apartment era" in Legnica, or will the system find a way to survive and metamorphose under new colors? Will the concrete of Legnica withstand another wave of investment from the State Treasury's severance packages?
