This is the story of a man who was considered a sinner by humans, but instead became a servant forgiven by Allah.
This true story from Basrah illustrates how far human judgment compares to Allah's infinite mercy.
A drunkard died, and none of his neighbors cared. They even refused to offer prayers for him. His wife could only afford to hire four laborers to take care of his body, then took it to the edge of the forest to bury it in private.
But no one expected it—a renowned ascetic descended from the hill where he had been in seclusion, went straight to the body, and prayed over it. When the people asked him why, he replied that Allah had forgiven the man and had been commanded to pray over him.
Apparently, behind his deplorable life, the man had hidden good deeds: he cared for orphans and cried for forgiveness every time he sobered up. His fear of Allah, coupled with small acts of kindness unnoticed by humans, led to the descent of Allah's mercy.
This story reminds us that: – Humans judge by what they see.
– But Allah judges from the heart, regret, and hidden deeds.
– Don't be quick to judge someone based on visible sins.
– It could be that the person we look down on is actually more noble in the sight of their Lord.
May this story soften our hearts, keep us from belittling others, and remind us that Allah's mercy is greater than all our mistakes.
