I'm often critical exhibitions that focus on the singular genius of white male designers, but, in the case of the Cristóbal Balenciaga, it's apt. His technical skill is to this day unparalleled. You get a sampler of his virtuosity in “Balenciaga in Black” at the Kunstmuseum in the Hague, which features more than one hundred costumes and accessories from the Palais Galliera and Balenciaga Archives. All of the objects have one thing in common. They are all in Balenciaga's favorite color. Black. In lieu of the more usual undyed muslin, Balenciaga used black toiles when constructing a garment, which allowed him to focus more on silhouette. Indeed, Balenciaga's boldest creations were in black, reflecting his reputation for being more as a sculptor of textiles than a “designer." Black has a strong tradition in Spanish fashion conveying Catholic austerity. Moreover, black not only references of the moody portraiture of Goya and Velázquez, but also the dark, evocative paintings of the Dutch masters of the exhibition's location in the Netherlands. #cristobalbalenciaga #balenciaga #fashioncuration #fashion
