Byung-Chul Han received the 2025 Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities this past weekend. In his acceptance speech, the philosopher harshly criticized the neoliberal system, which offers us a fictitious freedom based on self-exploitation, before a large group of Iberian representatives and indispensable tools of that same neoliberal system at the local level.
The author of "The Burnout Society" reminded the audience that his work seeks to question the illusion of freedom promoted by the neoliberal system, an inefficient, unjust, and ecocidal system that is incompatible with sustainability and happiness. And while the thinker spoke, queens, princesses, bureaucrats, and commoners pretended to understand the philosopher who was portraying them. A moment worth remembering.
