I was invited to speak at the book launch for Tailors and Wearers, a Rotterdam-based collective that explores the Afro-Surinamese dress practice koto. Many of the stylish attendees came in head-to-toe koto fashion. It was unlike anything else I've ever been asked to speak at before and I think it should serve as a model of museum programming. The Wereldmuseum (or "World Museum") provided the space and funding, but ceded the organization and catering to the group. I was the only academic speaker and I shared my research on headwraps. The rest of the participants were poets, performers, and musicians. In this collaborative space, I learned as much from the other participants and attendees as they hopefully learned from me. I highly suggest that you get a copy of Tailors and Wearers's book. Though in Dutch, it's primarily composed of stunning images of women in koto dress taken by the project's photographer Michelle.
