Ashoka Halwa Recipe | Traditional South Indian Sweet | Thanjavur Special
Ashoka Halwa is a rich, velvety dessert made with moong dal, sugar, and ghee – a true gem from Tamil Nadu’s Tanjore region. Soft, glossy, and melt-in-the-mouth, this sweet is often served during special occasions and temple festivals.

Ingredients:
Moong dal – ½ cup
Sugar – 1 cup
Ghee – ½ cup
Wheat flour – 1 tbsp
Cardamom powder – ½ tsp
Cashews – 8 to 10
Food color (optional)
Water – 1½ cups
Instructions :
🔥 Dry roast the moong dal, Wash and pressure cook moong dal with 1½ cups water until soft (3–4 whistles). Mash it well or blend into a fine paste.
🔥In a pan, heat a tsp of ghee and roast cashews till golden. Set aside.
🔥In the same pan, add wheat flour and roast lightly in a bit of ghee until you get a nice aroma. Don’t burn it.
🔥To the roasted wheat flour, add the mashed moong dal and mix well.
🔥Add sugar and stir continuously on medium flame. The mixture will loosen first, then thicken.
🔥Add ghee little by little while stirring. The halwa will start leaving the sides.
🔥Add cardamom powder, food color (if using), and roasted cashews. Mix well.
🔥Rich, glossy Ashoka Halwa is ready to melt in your mouth.
