The exquisite corpse is a collaborative drawing exercise popularized by European surrealists in the 1920s. It's also the basis for Kerry James Marshall's new exhibition "Exquisite Corpse: This Is Not The Game" at Jack Shainman. Marshall adds a new layer of political meaning to what is often interpreted as a frivolous parlor game. For Marshall, technical skill is the key to unlocking the complexity of African American life. It's Marshall's mastery that creates these fragmented black figures. Each work in the exhibition gives the illusion that they are an assemblage of three separately drawn elements, but are instead detailed paintings and drawings that are created in a trompe-l'œil effect. Marshall continues to use his creative practice to make provocative statements about the black body and African American identity. As the subtitle suggests, "this is not the game," but an example of Marshall's singularity and virtuosity. #kerryjamesmarshall #jackshainman #blackart
