On August 7, 1930, two African American men Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith were lynched in Marion, Indiana, which was recorded in a photo by Lawrence Beitler. They were accused of a crime, detained, and held in jail. They were hanged on the lawn of a courthouse before there was any chance of due process. Abram Smith was the great uncle of artist Samuel Levi Jones. In this video, he explains how he found out about the incident and his personal connection to it. "Popular Tree," his contribution to my exhibition "Past Is Present," has helped him process the generational trauma of this event.
