"The Color Is" is the fashion supplement to Nick Cave's current survey exhibition at the Guggenheim. When he was approached to do a retrospective, he asked that there be a satellite exhibition at the Dusable Museum, a six-decade-plus-old African American museum in Chicago's South Side. When Nick saw the Roundhouse at the DuSable, where the exhibition would be mounted, it reminded him of the "The Color Is" sequence in The Wiz, hence the name of the exhibition. He invited his fashion designer brother Jack to show work alongside him. The two studied together at the Kansas City Art Institute and started out in fashion design, though Nick is better known as an artist. "The Color Is" is a fashion exhibition, but it is also a conversation between two brothers reflecting on their evolving African American identities and similar, yet different aesthetics. Curated by Danny Dunson, the exhibition adds context, nuance, and personality to Cave's more institutional showing at the Guggenheim. #nickcave #blackart #jackcave #chicago
