Padre Pio was a man marked by Heaven — and misunderstood on earth.
Born Francesco Forgione in southern Italy, he became a Capuchin friar and priest. In 1918, he received the stigmata, the wounds of Christ, which he bore for 50 years. It made him famous worldwide — but also drew suspicion. For years, he was forbidden to say public Mass or hear confessions.
But holiness can’t be hidden. During his life, thousands of miracles were reported — healings, conversions, bilocations, prophetic knowledge, even multiplying food. He himself never claimed them; he pointed everything back to God. Through it all, Padre Pio clung to his rosary — praying almost without ceasing.
After his great-grandfather’s death, Padre Pio continued to pray for his “happy death.” A friar asked why he prayed for someone already dead. Padre Pio replied: “For the Lord, the past doesn’t exist; the future doesn’t exist. Everything is an eternal present. Those prayers had already been taken into account. And so I repeat that even now I can pray for the happy death of my great-grandfather.”
(The Holy Souls, Fr. Alessio Parente)
He also once said: “Pray, hope, and don’t worry. Worry is useless. God is merciful and will hear your prayer.”
He died in 1968, canonized in 2002, leaving behind miracles, a hospital for the sick, and a legacy of radical trust.
