Constructed in 1841 on the outskirts of Berlin and was regarded as Berlin's "gateway to the south"

By 1882 the station had become an international hub with trains coming in from Vienna, Prague, Rome, Basel, Athens and Constantinople

In 1933 to the begining of the second world war, people used the station to flee the country. In 1936 special trains made it possible for Jews to flee to Palestine

In 1938-9 the so called children's trains were running from the station to send Jewish children to Britain

In 1942 it became one of three deportation stations in Berlin, with particularly the older population going to Theresienstadt ghetto and concentration camp

Between 1944-45 the station was badly damaged during a bombing raid on Berlin
