Quilt Layout on the Design Wall – Wiggle Room Scrap Quilt in Progress at The Nest Retreat Center
We’re back this morning at The Nest Retreat Center in Conrad, Iowa, with the next step in my Wiggle Room quilt from the Master Your Stripology Ruler book. Earlier today, I shared how I cut my scraps into perfect 5" squares using the Stripology ruler and stitched them into triangle-squares. Now it’s time for one of my favorite parts of quilting—laying out the blocks on the design wall.
A design wall is an essential quilting tool. It allows you to:
See your quilt design full-size and in progress
Move blocks around easily for better color balance
Step back to view the overall pattern and flow
Snap photos of different layouts for a fresh perspective
In this video, I’m arranging my triangle-squares, experimenting with color placement, and showing you how photos help me fine-tune the design. Whether you’re a beginner quilter or an experienced sewist, using a design wall can transform the way you plan your quilt top.
The Wiggle Room pattern is perfect for scrap busting—a great choice if you have leftover fabrics or fat quarters waiting for their moment. This project is coming together right here at Hen & Chicks Studio’s retreat center, where quilters and crafters gather year-round to create in a bright, welcoming space.
If you love quilting, fabric organization, and discovering tools that make sewing easier, you’ll enjoy following along with this project. Watch until the end for tips on color placement and why photographing your layout can make such a difference.
