Right Fish, Right Zone
🐟 Top Zone – The Surface Swimmers
The top zone is the uppermost layer of your aquarium, right near the water's surface.
Fish in this zone love to hang out where they can easily access oxygen from the air.
Some even have special organs, like the labyrinth organ in Gouramis and Bettas, allowing them to breathe surface air.
These fish often eat floating food and enjoy open surface space or floating plants.
Examples: Hatchetfish, Bettas, Dwarf Gouramis, Halfbeaks.
🐠 Middle Zone – The Active Swimmers
The middle zone is the busiest and most active part of the tank.
Fish in this space are usually the most eye-catching, swimming freely in the center.
They appreciate open water to move around and are often the centerpiece of community aquariums.
It’s important to decorate the tank in a way that doesn’t block their movement.
Examples: Tetras, Rasboras, Barbs, Angelfish, Mollies.
🐡 Bottom Zone – The Bottom Dwellers
This is the lower part of your aquarium, where fish stay close to the substrate.
Bottom-dwellers help clean up leftover food and love to explore crevices, caves, or plants at the base of the tank.
Make sure the substrate is soft like sand or smooth gravel to protect their delicate barbels.
Examples: Corydoras Catfish, Loaches, Plecos, Kuhli Loaches.
