Filipina-Canadian Rechie Aileen Salazar-Valdez Appointed Minister in Canada Rechie Aileen Salazar-Valdez made history as the first federally elected Filipina-Canadian Member of Parliament in 2021. She represents Mississauga—Streetsville in Ontario as a member of the Liberal Party of Canada. In 2023, Valdez became the first woman from the Philippine community to serve as a Cabinet minister, holding the position of Minister of Small Business until March 2025. Following the April 2025 election, Prime Minister Mark Carney appointed her as Minister of Women and Gender Equality. Valdez is the only Filipina-Canadian among the 28 ministers currently serving in the Canadian Cabinet. She also holds the role of State Secretary for Small Business and Tourism. Her family migrated to Canada in 1989. Valdez lives in Mississauga with her husband, Christopher, and their two children. She holds a degree in Computer Science and previously hosted and produced Fearlessly Creative, a television show on Filipino TV.
