Saddam Hussein's capture raised hopes that peace could be brought to Iraq and there is some evidence to suggest that part of the insurgency against the US led occupation was briefly disrupted. These hopes would be dashed in the Spring of 2004 and the few months of relative peace before this would prove to be the calm before the storm. Saddam was detained as a Prisoner of War and then handed over to an Iraqi War Crimes tribunal that found him guilty and sentenced him to death. On the 30th of December 2006 he was executed by hanging. Interesting Facts about the capture: The $25 million bounty was not reportedly not paid as the tip had not been given voluntarily. The mission was called “Red Dawn” after the 1984 movie starring Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen. Over 600 soldiers raided to spots called Wolverine 1 and Wolverine 2 another reference to the film. Saddam had $750 000 in cash in a suitcase The tip identified the bodyguard as being in likely contact with Saddam. The US taskforce then arrested and interrogated dozens of his family members and this eventually led to a safehouse where he was discovered. The people cheering the loudest are Iraqi reporters
