As the war in Ukraine enters its fifth year, more than one and a half million soldiers have been killed or wounded. Across 800 miles of frontline, thousands of bodies lie unreachable in no man’s land. More than 150,000 soldiers on both sides remain missing, their fate unknown and their families left waiting.
In this Times Originals documentary, special correspondent Anthony Loyd travels to Ukraine to meet the families searching for answers they never wished for, and the forensic teams working to give the missing back their names.

Is Russia Ready For War With Nato? Mark Urban examines Russia's military capacity following the Ukraine conflict. While the country has sustained heavy losses—with high-end estimates suggesting up to 250,000 soldiers killed, including over 7,000 officers—its arms industry continues to rapidly expand production. Various assessments suggest Russia could reconstitute its forces between 2026 and 2029. Urban explores the strategic implications of a rebuilt Russian military on NATO's borders and what officials describe as "a very big Russia problem" ahead. President Donald Trump holds a new conference after the United States said it captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, and flown them out of the country. The airstrikes on Caracas in the early hours of Saturday morning and the “capture” of Maduro of Venezuela mark the most dramatic US intervention in Latin America in decades. But this is not the first time the United States has intervened in Venezuela, or the wider region.
Shadow warfare is changing. Countries are now using proxy agents: criminals, freelancers and online recruits to carry out acts of sabotage while keeping their own agents out of sight.
Mark Urban shows us how these networks are built and deployed, from arson attacks in London to railway explosions in Poland and drone teams inside Iran.
Today, proxies are hired through encrypted apps, online portals and face-to-face meetings. Agencies like MI5 and GCHQ are fighting back using new spy laws, digital forensics, financial tracking and technical surveillance to uncover hidden cells and expose modern espionage.
Paul Doyle, the man accused of driving into crowds at Liverpool's Premier League victory parade, has been sentenced to 21 years and six months in prison.
Newly released videos from Merseyside Police show Doyle's arrest along with CCTV and dashcam footage from the day of the attack on May 26.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been torn apart by a violent power struggle between two rival generals. Human rights groups have described the conflict as genocidal, while millions of civilians are caught in the middle of a war shaped not only by internal rivalry, but by global interests looking on from afar.
On one side is General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of the Sudanese Armed Forces. On the other is his former deputy, General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, who leads the Rapid Support Forces. Whoever prevails will gain control of Sudan’s vast oil and gold wealth, assets with enormous strategic value.
